As temperatures finally starting plummeting and we dig out our thermals, a reliable and comfortable performance baselayer, such as the Craft Women's Active Extreme 2, forms part of an essential, cold weather barrier while out on the bike.

Soft and comfortable from the moment you slip it on, the Craft Women's Extreme 2 baselayer is one of those next-to-the-skin layers that not only provides essential wicking properties to keep your body temperature at optimum performance levels, but is also much tougher than it looks - just what you need when you think about how many times this garment will go through the washing machine.

A decent baselayer is one of those items you just shouldn’t leave the house without this winter. They are great at regulating temperature and provide a lightweight, extra layer that can make more of a difference than you may think. I've worn the Women’s Craft Active Extreme 2 Baselayer on a number of cold rides, including a round of the Wessex Cyclocross League, to see how it performs. I tested the dark pink/ purple colour, but if that’s not your thing, you can choose white or black instead.

Craft, known for creating top-notch apparel for Cyclists, Cross-Country Skiers and Runners, split their collections into three categories – Elite, Performance and Active. The Active range of baselayers is specifically designed to provide comfortable training wear of good quality with efficient moisture transportation at a good price. We like that!

The Active Extreme baselayer 2 on test uses Craft’s, Moving Wing Technology™ for greater freedom of movement and sweat wicking properties for optimal temperature management during workouts in medium-cold to cold conditions. The design and fit is extremely comfortable, with the Flatlock seams and elastic material fitted snuggly in all the right places.

It has a different, softer, mesh-like material under the armpits to not only regulate temperature, but also to give more movement – which, if you must pick your bike up and jump over barriers in a cyclocross race, is very handy. The fabric also has quick drying properties, which is great when you can’t go straight home or get changed after a ride. it also helps reduce the chances of you getting cold by pushing any moisture to the outside of the fabric and onto the next layer.

In summary: The Women’s Craft Active Extreme 2 is a comfortable, light-weight, performance baselayer that carries more technology and small details in its design than you would normally expect. Thankfully, Craft now make winter riding a more pleasurable experience.
