Racing against the clock and the elements? The wind and waterproof Shield Jersey from Swedish manufactures, Craft, works a treat at keeping you protected when the wind and rain are out to get you.

As cyclists we all appreciate that wind can be both friend and foe. Add a good British downpour into the equation and your core temperature can drop like a stone. With more and more companies designing their own take on technical jerseys, serious consideration should be spent looking to add a weatherproof jersey to your cycling wardrobe.

Craft have gone to town to provide riders with a performance jersey that’s designed to keep the worst of the weather at bay, while aiming to maintain core body temperature at optimum performance. Basically, if you like riding in wet and windy conditions throughout spring, summer and autumn, then the Shield Jersey from Craft is a serious contender.

Aside from being constructed from the highly effective and stretchy VENT AIR fabric, other features that set the Shield Jersey apart include ¾ length sleeves, mesh panels under the armpits for greater ventilation, and a brushed fleece collar to keep you warm when fully zipped up.

So how does it feel when worn? Well, the Shield Jersey is surprisingly light, and for a windproof jersey, breathes remarkably well. I have worn it when the weather looked really threatening, but then failed to release the heavens, so being warm and dry was ok as the full length zip plays its part to help ventilation.

When the weather doth blow, the high collar is a real boon, as are the long sleeves and tail that is kept in place by a deep elasticated section on the rear. Three good size rear pockets are augmented by a smaller zip pocket for stashing small valuables and change.

A really nice touch is the reflective storm flap that covers the full length zip; nothing is getting past the Shield Jersey. There’s no shortage of reflective sections to the Shield Jersey, front, back and side are catered for here, adding more proof that this jersey is designed to be worn during overcast conditions.

In summary: Craft have produced in the Shield Jersey a lightweight wind and weatherproof top that perfect for changeable conditions throughout spring, summer and autumn. Excellent levels of breathability don’t hinder the Shied Jerseys ability to keep you core temperature at optimum in summer downpours.

An abundance of nice touches and fine detailing make all the difference with the Shield Jersey, and thanks to the stretchiness of the VENT AIR fabric, the fit is snug yet very comfortable in deed.
