So impressed are we with Verge cycling apparel, we’ve chosen them as the kit of choice for our new Cycle Reviewer team kit.
The Strike kit is available in both men and women’s versions, as is the majority of Vege clothing. We felt the Strike kit offered us the best combination of performance and durability, plus of course – price.
With a minimum order of just a few pieces and the price of the design work included into the order, we aim toorder more, cold weather kit as the seasons change for no addtional price to the design or set up costs.
Top-end performance cycling apparel should feel comfortable, almost gossamer-like in feel the moment you’ve pulled it on. If it’s not comfortable, you simply aren’t going to wear it and you’ve wasted a great deal of money.
Verge Strike SS Jersey
Having received the sample kit for sizing in good time, the large sized Strike SS Jersey instantly felt like a second skin. Worth noting here, Verge kit measures up similar to Italian clothing, so you might want to go up one size from a UK size garment.
Body contouring and snug, but with no pulling or tightening across the back, sides, or shoulders and classically short at the waist, the Strike Jersey was an instant hit. The full length hidden zip ran smooth every time, up or down, and the lack of a high collar only further enhances the performance aspirations of the Strike Jersey.
Quality kit like the Verge Strike family makes you feel like a pro-racer, and if you feel good then the chances are you are phycologically better prepared and will perform better - well, works for me, anyhow.
The three rear pockets are not overly wide or deep, but there’s enough room to securely carry small essentials like multi-tools, phone, tube, CO2 cartidges and gels.
Verge Strike Bib Shorts
Verge have constructed the Strike Bib Shorts using the four-way stretch Synapse Fixed Fabric to great effect. Close fitting enough to maximise muscle protection without feeling tight, the comfort afforded by the Strike Bib’s is quite extraordinary. Without trying them I wouldn’t have believed how good they are, and they have certainly proved their worth of late.
The shoulder straps are interesting. They look and feel like long, wide lengths of heavy duty elastic, but they work really well. They don’t twist around either as you loop them over your shoulders, and they also stay firmly and securely in place once positioned.
The men’s Nudo Chamois (women’s is Nuda) that came fitted to the Strike Bib Shorts felt nothing but miraculous, quite possibly the best, most comfortable chamois that I’ve had the pleasure of sitting on for hours on end.
Laser cut, ultra-high-density foam form the core element to the Nudo Chamois, while the Bioceramic surface fabric ensures moisture management goes unimpeded. It stretches and move freely with every body movement, and on a recent 240 mile bike ride the Strike Bib Shorts were nothing short of life saving – or so it felt at the end.
The 7cm leg band on each leg of our sample shorts are also available in 4.5cm and 9cm. We’ve plumbed for the Goldilocks’ effect and we’re sticking with 7cm.
Verge Flight Open Vest
I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the Flight Open Vest when it first arrived, but basically it’s a gilet cut short at the back to allow access to the rear pockets of your jersey.
On our recent test ride in West Cornwall, where the summer weather was more akin to four seasons in one day, the Flight Open Vest certainly help keep the elements at bay thanks to its wind and waterproof Volare 3-layer membrane fabric.
The Flight Open Vest also features a double opening zip for ease of access and is neatly tucked away in a small garage at the neckline for maximum comfort. The waistband is a sturdy micro-grip affair and really holds the vest comfortably in place and refuses to ride up your back under any riding conditions.
The Flight Open Vest isn’t in our initial order, but is first on the list for our second order.
In summary: performance cycling apparel at its finest. Verge offer an excellent online custom build service and there are so many garments to choose from you’ll be like a kid in a sweet shop wondering what to buy first.
